ASK THE DENTAL EXPERT
Teeth cleaning cost in pune
My dentist says I have a cavity and that I need a filling. But why doesn’t my tooth hurt?
A dental cavity is a decay in the tooth surface. The tooth crown has an outer layer called enamel, a middle layer called dentin and the innermost layer called the pulp. Probably the decay in your tooth would be only in the outer layer i.e. enamel. Decay in this layer doesn’t have many signs and symptoms and you are not experiencing any sensitivity or pain. I would suggest you get the dental filling (restoration) done as the smaller the decay lesser the tooth structure is lost. Always remember a stitch in time saves nine.
I am interested in changing the shape of my teeth. What options are available?
The process of changing the shape and size of teeth is called smile designing. The different types of dental treatment options available to change the shape of teeth are laminates, veneers, composite restoration, componeers, crown lengthening procedures etc. It is always advisable to consult an experienced dentist who specialises in smile design. Your dentist can suggest the best treatment options after a thorough clinical examination.
How often should I visit my dentist? How often should I get my teeth professionally cleaned?
Prevention is better than cure, and professional cleaning is a preventive measure for many oral health problems. Scaling (cleaning) procedures remove plaque and tartar that hardens to the surfaces of your teeth and roots. It is recommended that you visit a dentist minimum of two times a year for a regular dental check-up. Every individual requires professional teeth cleaning. It varies from six months to a year. The time frame depends on your teeth alignment, gum condition, contents of minerals in your saliva, your regular oral hygiene regime, etc. The frequency is best decided by your dentist.

Hello doctor, I have pain in my left lower wisdom tooth. I visited a dentist who asked me to get a CBCT scan done. He told me the wisdom tooth is in a sleeping position and very close to the nerve. I have few a questions – Will it be painful to remove it? Should I do the procedure under GA or LA? I have been reading online, are there chances of paralysis?
Yes, your dentist is right, a CBCT scan should be done, after which any dentist can guide you more accurately. As per my experience, wisdom teeth can be easily removed in a dental clinic setup, where proper sterilization protocols are followed and an experienced oral surgeon performs the procedure. Surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia (LA). Once local anaesthesia is given, it should not be painful. After the anaesthesia wears out, there will be some discomfort, which can be controlled with painkillers and antiinflammatory drugs. However, general anaesthesia (GA) is suggested for very complicated cases, or if the patient is having other severe medical conditions. Yes, there are chances of paresthesia, not paralysis. This can be a temporary loss of sensation if there is damage to the nerve below the wisdom tooth. This is a complication but it is rare.
I floss my teeth daily. I believe it is causing my gums to tear. Can flossing lead to gum problems?
If flossing led to gum problems dentists would never advise anyone to floss. The purpose of flossing is to clean the inter-dental areas between the teeth. You must be flossing very hard and in an improper way. This will lead to injury to the gums. Kindly visit a dentist, get a professional cleaning done and learn how to floss.
I have a cavity in my molar, and food gets stuck in it. But I am scared to visit the dentist. My friends say root canal is very painful and requires 4-5 sittings.
A. If you have a cavity and are aware of it, you should go to a dentist and get the necessary treatment i.e. root canal or cavity restoration. If it is not a deep cavity you may not even need a root canal treatment. However, that can only be evaluated after taking an X-Ray. Root canal process being painful is a myth. If a root canal is done with proper protocols and proper equipment/ instruments it is never painful. I think your friends have not been to the right dentist if they share this kind of an experience with you. In my opinion, a root canal can be done in a single sitting too, which is case-dependent and is not at all painful.
