ASK THE DENTAL EXPERT
Orthodontist in Pune
I am very scared of dental treatments. How do you prevent tooth cavities?
Cavities are small to big holes, which start developing on the hard surface of the teeth. The reason for dental caries (decay) is attributed to various factors like improper brushing, and consumption of sugary, starchy and acidic beverages. Maintaining dental hygiene, visiting the dentist for regular check-ups, and getting professional fluoride applications from your dentist are the few measures one can take to prevent tooth decay.
Of late, my teeth have become very sensitive. What should I do to get rid of this unpleasant sensation?
The best way to reduce sensitivity is to brush your teeth twice a day with very soft bristles and fluoridated (medicated) toothpaste. If you still do not see any signs of improvement in the next seven to 15 days, it is advisable for you to visit your dentist who would clinically examine your teeth and take an appropriate dental X-Ray to find the root cause of your discomfort.
My gums bleed when I brush in the morning. My partner complains of a foul smell from my mouth too. What can be done?
The bleeding in the gums is due to infection in your gums caused by an accumulation of tater, plaque and calculus between the teeth and gums. In severe cases, the gums even get filled with pus.
Depending upon the degree of damage, it is called gingivitis and periodontitis. The treatment for this has to be decided by your dentist after a thorough clinical examination. This may include scaling and polishing, deep cleaning, or even gum flap surgery depending upon the extent of damage.
My boy is six years old and complains of pain in the gums of the front teeth. His milk teeth have not fallen off yet. What do you recommend?
His deciduous teeth will gradually become loose and fall off . The permanent teeth are erupting. The central incisors erupt around this age and during the eruption, there can be slight pain and irritation. But visit a dentist and get an X-Ray done. The X-ray will tell you to exact position of the permanent teeth.
Do I need regular dental check-ups?
While your teeth may look okay from your end, issues can be ongoing without you realizingit. Some oral health complications also are not detectable by the naked eye. By visiting a dentist and having a more in-depth examination, you ensure that everything is actually progressing well.
One should get a regular checkup and scaling(cleaning) done atleast once a year.
I am Diabetic and 79 years old male, can I get Dental Implants done?
Dear Sir, Dental Implants can be done at any age provided your diabetes is controlled and you have a good bony support. I recommend you get a CBCT scan done for your jaw bones before going ahead for implant procedure.
What is cavity?
Cavities are formed as a result of tooth decay , where spots in the enamel are worn away, destroying the tooth structure. Tooth decay happens when the teeth are exposed to sugars and starches and the bacterial plaque on the teeth secrete acids as a response. These acids eat away at the enamel and can tear it down entirely if not taken care of. This can in turn spoil your entire tooth.
How do cavities form in Teeth? Is it important to treat cavities?
Cavities are mostly formed due to accumulation of bacteria, plaque, tartar etc on tooth surfaces. Improper hygiene and cleaning of teeth can lead to cavities over a period of time.
People with a high sugar diet who don't maintain good Oral hygiene are susceptible to cavities. Another common cause of cavities is gum line recession which can progress as one gets older, exposing lower portions of the teeth to plaque.
Symptoms of cavities can include hypersensitivity to cold or heat in a particular tooth and persistent pain in the tooth. In addition, visible indicators such as pits or holes in the teeth. To treat a cavity, it's best to detect in early stages, otherwise the tooth decay may advance to the point where a root canal or a more severe procedure is required to rectify the situation. If caught early enough, a simple cleaning and filling may be all that's needed to eliminate a cavity. If too much of the tooth structure is compromised, a crown may be required.

Please use a soft bristle tooth brush and visit your dentist to evaluate gingivitis or periodontitis. Also learn the proper brushing technique from your dentist.
