I am interested in changing the shape of my teeth. What options are available?
The process of changing the shape and size of teeth is called smile designing. The different types of dental treatment options available to change the shape of teeth are laminates, veneers, composite restoration, componeers, crown lengthening procedures etc. It is always advisable to consult an experienced dentist who specialises in smile design. Your dentist can suggest the best treatment options after a thorough clinical examination.
How often should I visit my dentist? How often should I get my teeth professionally cleaned?
Prevention is better than cure, and professional cleaning is a preventive measure for many oral health problems. Scaling (cleaning) procedures remove plaque and tartar that hardens to the surfaces of your teeth and roots. It is recommended that you visit a dentist minimum of two times a year for a regular dental check-up. Every individual requires professional teeth cleaning. It varies from six months to a year. The time frame depends on your teeth alignment, gum condition, contents of minerals in your saliva, your regular oral hygiene regime, etc. The frequency is best decided by your dentist.
How should I take care of my teeth?

• Use fluoridated toothpaste with a soft bristle brush
• Eat healthy fruit and vegetables
• Drink more water. At regular intervals
• Limit acidic and sugary food

For many years I have had slight cavities in my molar and premolars, but for the past few weeks they have started to pain and I can't eat anything sweet due to it. Also, I have a sensitivity problem in my incisor teeth. What should I do?
Visit a dentist. Once the dentist takes X-Ray he will be able to guide if cavities are deep or not. Accordingly, you will have to get composite fillings or root canal treatment done. Meanwhile, start using sensitive toothpaste. Don't delay visiting your dentist.
My mother has been wearing a denture from last 20 years. Now her denture keeps moving and she is not able to eat well. What needs to be done?
Ideally a life of a denture is just 4-5years. A denture needs to be relined or changed in this span as the underlying bones undergo resorbtion and re-modeling if there are no roots to support the bone. You need to visit a dentist and make a new denture for your mother. If she has decent quality bone and no or controlled systemic illnesses then I recommend you to get implants done and get her an implant supported denture. Visit an Implant specialist for thorough evaluation.
Hello sir, which is the best toothbrush to use?
There is no such thing as ‘best toothbrush’. There are different types of toothbrushes for different type of needs. In my opinion, the brushing technique is more important than the toothbrush you use. Ideally a soft bristle toothbrush is good for majority of the people. Request you to visit a dentist to know the proper brushing technique and your dentist will accordingly recommend the ideal toothbrush for you.
My back tooth is broken and very painful. At times there is a swelling in the gums, I am scared to get it removed. Any other solution?
If your tooth is broken and painful, first thing you should do is visit a dentist and get an X-Ray done. If the roots are intact chances are your dentist can do a root canal and save the tooth. After which you can put a cap/crown to the saved tooth. Incase extraction is recommended, you should get it done else there are chances of infection spreading in the bone and to your neighboring teeth. Extraction being painful is a myth. If extraction is done with proper protocols and procedure it is usually not painful. Your dentist will give you local anesthesia which will numb the entire area. You will not feel much pain when the dentist extracts the tooth. Post surgical pain and swelling can be controlled with pain killers and anti inflammatory drugs.
Which crowns are better? Metal crowns or metal free?
In my opinion metal free crowns are the best. They are also called Zirconia crowns. Crowns / caps which are made from a reputed dental laboratory and cad-cam designed are the best. Consult your dentist for the best option for you.
I keep getting bad smell from my mouth. I don’t smoke; I don’t chew tobacco or any such things.I brush twice daily. Still the foul smell persists. My wife doesn’t like to kiss me. What do you recommend?
You have to find out the reason for foul odour, also called as Halitosis. Recommend you to visit your dentist and get regular scaling & polishing (dental hygiene) done. Along with brushing regularly you should fl oss your teeth daily to clean the interdental areas where there are high chances of food getting stuck. Also use a good mouthwash two times a day. If foul odour still persists, it may not necessarily be related to your dental health. You may be having GIT (gastrointestinal tract) problems which also lead to foul odour. I recommend you to get a complete GIT checkup done.
