ASK THE DENTAL EXPERT

Root canal cost in pune

I am a 58-year-old man with diabetes. I used to regularly consume tobacco and gutkha, but I have completely given up these habits for the past six months. Now, I have been brushing my teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (before bed) and an Ayurvedic toothpaste (in the morning). However, I have been experiencing tooth sensitivity to both cold and hot food for some time now. Surprisingly, I never encountered this issue while I was still addicted to tobacco. I had hoped that quitting tobacco would bring relief, but I have not seen significant improvements.

Consumption of tobacco and guthka for many years can lead to abrasion and erosion of the tooth surfaces. The fluoride toothpaste is good, however, I cannot comment on any ayurvedic toothpaste. Toothpaste can be effective in decreasing sensitivity to a certain extent only. You may require to undergo root canal treatments for the teeth that are very sensitive followed by crowning up those teeth. Suggest you visit an experienced dentist for a complete clinical evaluation with X-rays. You are welcome to visit our clinic for further evaluation and treatment planning.

I am a 26-year-old girl and I have got my aligner treatment done, but I still am not happy with my smile. What is the next step?

You will need to visit a dentist who specialises in smile designing. I would suggest you get a digital simulation done which will show you how your present condition is and how it will look post-treatment. I would recommend laminates or veneers to get a perfect beautiful smile. You are welcome to visit my clinic for a digital smile design simulation.

I am a 90-year-old man. I have been wearing dentures for the past 25 years or so. I recently got a new set made six months ago. I am not happy with the fit as the lower denture keeps moving. What should I do?

With age our jaw bones tend to undergo resorption, especially if we do not have any teeth. I would recommend you to visit a prosthodontist, who specialises in dentures and get relining of the dentures done. Relining is adding some material on the inner surfaces of the denture which acts like a cushion. This may help the denture be more stable.

My father, who is 72 years old, is experiencing issues with his front lower teeth. They have become smaller, and his gums appear swollen. Although he doesn’t experience any pain, it affects the appearance of his smile. What do you recommend?

Attrition of teeth is common with age. His gums may be enlarged because of bad oral hygiene in the anterior tooth or because of the side effects of some medications. Suggest you visit us so we can clinically evaluate and give you an accurate diagnosis. A treatment plan will be to crown up the teeth that have become small in size and simultaneously treat the gingival enlargement. Once that is done your dad will have a beautiful smile.

Three months ago, I visited a dentist and had my teeth professionally cleaned. I brush daily once a day for four to five minutes making sure the brush reaches all the corners. Still, I have bad breath. I don’t smoke or consume tobacco or gutkha. I am a vegetarian with 60- 70% of salad intake. Please suggest.

You have to find out the reason for the foul odour, also called Halitosis. Recommend you visit your dentist and get regular scaling and polishing (dental hygiene) done. Along with brushing regularly, you should floss your teeth daily to clean the interdental areas where there are high chances of food getting stuck. Also, use a good mouthwash two times a day. If foul odour persists, it may not necessarily be related to your dental health. You may be having GIT (gastrointestinal tract) problems which also lead to foul odour. I recommend you get a complete GIT checkup done.

My front teeth have stains which are chalky white in colour. I am not happy with my smile. What is the best solution to this problem?

Chalky white stains on teeth are mostly due to dental fluorosis. It is caused by over-exposure to fluoride during young age. There may be many other causes as well, however, the ideal treatment for this is to get dental laminates or veneers done on your front teeth (the teeth that can be seen when you smile). The other treatment is you can get Zirconia crowns (caps) fixed on your teeth. Visit a dentist who specialises in digital smile design so that the dentist can show you a simulation of how your teeth will look after treatment. This will help you decide the best treatment option.
