I am 3 months pregnant, and I have severe pain in my third molar. The dentist is not extracting it and says it is not safe. What should I do?

Wait for your second trimester to start. The second trimester is the best and safest period, during pregnancy, to extract any tooth. Meanwhile, consult your physician to give you mild painkillers or anti-inflammatory medicine. When you are in your second trimester visit an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

I am 92 years old and have been wearing dentures for the past 20 years. My lower denture keeps moving and I am unable to bite the food at all. What should I do?

Since you have been a denture wearer for over 20 years, the lower bone/ mandibular bone must have got resorbed completely by now. It is the drawback of wearing dentures for many years. Hence your denture must be loose as there is no stability. Get a CBCT scan done to check if there is any bone left. If there is bone and you have good overall health, a dentist could place a few implants and you could wear an implant-supported denture. If there is no bone for implants, I am afraid a dentist can’t do much. At best you can make a new denture with a better fit.

My wife has a cavity in the lower left molar. We visited a dentist who did a filling. Now she has severe pain after the composite filling was done. She is scared to go back to the dentist? Can we control the pain with antibiotics and painkillers?

The cavity in the molar must have been very deep, or the filling done by your dentist must be very close to the pulp (nerve). Please go back to your dentist and get an X-Ray of that area done. If the cavity/filling is deep, you will have to get root canal treatment done. Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthesia which is usually pain-free except for the prick of the needle. Your problem will mostly be sorted by doing root canal treatment. Consult your dentist in detail about the procedure.

We moved back from the US this year, my daughter is 7 years old. Our dentists in the US had recommended a checkup and hygiene regime which we followed religiously. Our dentist here says it’s not necessary to do any treatments on kids. What should we do?

Kindly visit a pedodontist, a child specialist dentist. Follow the oral hygiene procedures as recommended by your dentist in the US. I recommend you get regular scaling (teeth cleaning) done at least once a year. Fluoride treatment and pit and fissure sealants for your children every year, wherever required.

I am 24 and I have gaps in between all my front teeth. Is there any solution to get rid of them? Really looks very ugly.

There are many treatment options available to close the gaps between teeth. It depends upon the time frame you are looking at. The treatment options can range from conventional braces and dental aligners which take months to give you the desired result to other options like dental laminates, Veneers, composite laminates, dental crowns, and many more which help to give the desired result in a few days. It is always advisable to visit the dentist to discuss the pros and cons of each option and to choose the best one suitable for you.

My front tooth has been discoloured suddenly. It has become dark yellow or brown. Over the last 1 year. I do not have any pain. What should I do?

Visit your dentist and get an X-ray done. The pulp in the tooth must have necrosed and hence the discoloration. You can get a root canal done followed by a crown for the aesthetics. You can also get the tooth bleached. However, your dentist will evaluate clinically and suggest the best option

How many times a year should I have my teeth cleaned?

Scaling and polishing are professionally cleaning the plaque and calculus i.e. the dirt accumulated between your teeth and gums. On average one needs to get their teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months to a year depending on the recommendation of your treating dentist.

Which is the best toothpaste to use?

There is no such thing as the best toothpaste. These days there are different kinds of toothpaste for different issues. Like sensitive toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste, whitening toothpaste, etc. You can buy one depending on your need. I do not promote any particular brand.

My kid is 7. She is getting double teeth in her lower jaw, especially the front region. Why is this happening? Any abnormalities?

In many kids, the permanent teeth erupt in the mouth without shedding the primary/ milk teeth. These primary teeth are called over-retained deciduous teeth. Many times, they are moving and shaky too. You need to visit your dentist who will extract/remove the primary teeth so that the permanent teeth get proper space to erupt in the mouth.
